From the Latin word communis we derive the word “communicate,” a word often used to define the simple exchange and conveyance of information and news. But we also derive the words “commune” and “common,” thereby broadening the definition of communication to include its societal and even spiritual roles. To communicate is to share and understand our society.
So the title of this blog, in addition to perhaps exhorting media to more carefully consider their role in an increasingly communicative society, also suggests that the critiques and discussions are of importance not only to media producers and consumers but also when considering the health and future of our society as a whole. We all share a desire for communication that reveals the truth. It is our common need.
